Baltic Braids

Knitted braids are the perfect embellishment for any project! The Baltic countries of Latvia and Estonia have many different styles of braids that have added interesting details to mittens, gloves, socks, and sweaters. Learn about three styles of braids, the basic foundation, and experiment with color combinations and directionality.

  • Students should be comfortable knitting in the round and knitting with two colours at a time for easy colourwork knitting
  • Materials to bring

    4mm for knitting small circumference (Double pointed needles or circular needles for magic loop)
  • Stitch markers
  • The yarn that you will work in the workshop will be gifted by one of the sponsors of the festival.
  • Homework

    Using 4mm needles with MC (main color), cast on 40 sts. Join in the round and place marker for beginning of round.
  • Rnds 1 - 2: work 1x1 rib as follows: [k1, p1], repeat [-] to end. Rnds 3 - 4: k to end.
